How to Stay Young, Strong, and Thriving: Science-Backed Tips for a Healthier You

Writer: Fit with FrankFit with Frank

We all want to feel strong, energetic, and, let’s be honest—avoid creaky knees when getting off the sofa. But what’s the secret to staying youthful as we age? According to Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Vonda Wright, the answer lies in movement, mindset, and making smart choices about how we live....

Why Strength Training is the Real Fountain of Youth

One of Dr. Wright’s biggest takeaways? Strength training is non-negotiable if you want to stay strong and youthful. As we age, we naturally lose muscle mass—a process called sarcopenia (fancy science term for “why lifting your shopping bags gets harder over time”). But here’s the good news: strength training slows down, or even reverses, this process.

How to Put This Into Action:

  • Lift something heavy (but safely!). This doesn’t mean Olympic weightlifting—bodyweight exercises, resistance bands, or dumbbells work too.

  • Aim for at least two strength sessions per week. Squats, lunges, push-ups, and resistance band exercises are great places to start.

  • Make it fun! Strength training doesn’t have to be dull. All of my workouts have been designed to make you work hard and smile at the same time - so you stay motivated and actually enjoy getting stronger.

Movement is Medicine (and Your Energy Booster)

Dr. Wright’s research highlights that movement isn't just about burning calories—it’s about keeping your body functional. Daily activity improves circulation, keeps your joints happy, and reduces the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease and diabetes.

How to Put This Into Action:

  • Move every day. It doesn’t have to be a gym session—walking, dancing in your kitchen, or stretching while watching TV all count!

  • Break up long periods of sitting. If you work at a desk, stand up and move around every 30–60 minutes.

  • Mix it up. A blend of cardio, flexibility, and strength training gives you the best results.

A Personal Note: Midlife, Movement & Finding Inspiration

This year, I turn 40—officially midlife according to Dr. Wright! And while that might sound a little daunting, I see it as a reminder that the choices I make today will shape how I feel in the decades ahead. I want to be strong, energetic, and capable—not just now, but well into my 50s, 60s, and beyond.

The best part? I get to work with incredible clients who prove every single day that age is no barrier to strength, fitness, and vitality. Seeing people in their 50s, 60s, 70s (and beyond!) showing up, moving well, lifting weights, and feeling amazing is all the inspiration I need. They remind me that getting older doesn’t mean slowing down—it means investing in your future self

Ready to Start Feeling Younger Today?

The science is clear: staying strong, active, and positive is the key to aging well. The best part? It’s never too late to start. Whether you’re a fitness newbie or a seasoned pro, making small changes now will pay off for years to come.
