Beginners Guide To Supplements in 2025: Which Ones Do You Actually Need?

Let’s be honest — trying to figure out which supplements to take in 2025 is like trying to choose a box set on Netflix... there’s too much choice, and you’re not even sure half of it is worth your time (or money).

From collagen to creatine, magnesium to mushrooms, everyone and their dog seems to be popping pills in the name of health. But how do you know what’s right for you?
So... do you even need supplements?
The short answer? Maybe. The long answer? It depends on your lifestyle, your diet, your stress levels, and whether or not your idea of ‘eating well’ is grabbing a banana on the way out the door (we’ve all been there).
Here are a few tips to help you get started without losing your mind or your overdraft:
1. Start With the Basics (AKA, What Are You Missing?)
Before you order a supplement stack big enough to rival a bodybuilder’s, it’s worth finding out what you actually need. A simple blood test or chat with a nutrition-savvy health pro can go a long way.
“There are some people who do require specific vitamins... However, for the majority, a balanced diet should cover it.”
Translation: If your diet’s on point, you might not need to spend £30 a month on fancy capsules.
2. Food First, Supplements Second
Supplements are called “supplements” for a reason — they’re meant to supplement a decent diet, not replace your veggies. Think of them like a back-up dancer, not the star of the show.
That protein shake won’t undo a weekend of takeaways and no greens (unfortunately).
3. Watch Out for the Hype
Every year there’s a new “miracle” supplement promising to fix your gut, clear your brain fog, help you sleep, and tidy your kitchen. Spoiler alert: most don’t live up to the hype.
That said, a few of the classics have stood the test of time. Omega-3s, vitamin D, magnesium — they’re not flashy, but they work. In fact:
“Combining omega-3 supplements, vitamin D, and regular exercise can significantly slow biological ageing and reduce the risk of age-related diseases.”
Not bad, eh?
4. More Isn’t Always Better
Just because something is “natural” doesn’t mean you can guzzle it like orange squash. Too much of a good thing (yes, even iron or vitamin A) can cause more harm than good — or at the very least, some very expensive toilet trips.
Stick to the recommended doses, and if in doubt, check with someone qualified (no, your mate from yoga doesn’t count).
5. Buy Smart
The supplement world is a bit like online dating — a lot of great options, but also plenty of dodgy ones that overpromise and underdeliver. Look for brands that are third-party tested, transparent about their ingredients, and not full of fillers you can’t pronounce.

Remember: You don’t need to take everything. You just need to take what’s right for you. And maybe drink a bit more water while you’re at it. Hydration is the OG supplement.
Hope it helps :)
